General
Does Zoom require more broadband than average home wifi?
Zoom is relatively light with its network requirements. Please see the requirements below to compare with your home internet service provider’s plan.
Is there a preferred browser for Zoom?
Can students in China access Zoom?
Yes. Our students in China should be able to access Zoom.
Meeting Roles
How do I designate Co Hosts?
A host will designate the co host during a meeting. See Zoom’s instructions linked below:
Can I designate two or more people to co-host?
Yes, there is no limitation to the number of co-hosts in a meeting.
What's the advantage of a co-host?
Co-hosts can assist with chat, manage participants and a few other things. This would allow the Host to focus on the presentation and moderating the meeting.
Is Alternative Host different from Co-Host?
Can an Alternative Host be a non-risd person?
No. A host must sign in the RISD’s Zoom portal (either on the web or through the Zoom app) to start a meeting.
Meeting Settings
How do the meeting authentication settings work?
If the authentication is turned on for your meeting, the invitees would be required to sign in to join the meeting.
How do meeting passwords work?
Passwords add an extra layer of security for your meetings. A password is set when scheduling a meeting. Anyone attempting to join a password protected meeting would either need the specific meeting link with the password embedded OR would be prompted to enter a password to join the meeting.
How is attendance recorded?
Can I set up Closed Captioning?
How do I set up and use a Waiting Room?
*Choose which participants to place in the waiting room can be set to "All Participants".
*Guests waiting do not see each other.
*You can customize a message they see when they arrive.
*You can send chat messages to those that are waiting but they all see the messages-no option to send individual chat messages to a single person in the waiting room.
*When in the meeting the attendee(candidate) will NOT see anyone in the waiting room.
*Co-Host and Host have the ability to manage the waiting room.
Recordings
Where are Zoom recordings stored?
The meeting host has the option to store recordings to their local computer or in the cloud. Zoom cloud recordings are stored under the individual user's Zoom account.
Who can access Zoom cloud recordings?
Only the meeting host has access to their cloud recordings and determine with whom/how they will share the recordings. *Admins (IT Admin of Zoom) have access to the Zoom recordings for support purposes.
Is there a storage space limit for Zoom cloud recordings?
Yes, however, it is a shared amount of space for all of RISD. Please download and/or delete meeting recordings from the cloud when not needed.
How do I share a Zoom cloud recording?
See Zoom's support article about
Managing cloud recordings for instructions on how to access your cloud recordings and sharing settings.
How do I limit the distribution of a shared cloud recording?
The meeting host can restrict access to specific viewers or groups, prevent downloading and assign a password for the recording. See Zoom's support article about
Settings for Sharing.
Do I need to get students' permission to record discussions? It is not necessary to ask for permission if the recording is only available to the students in the course and the ability to download is restricted (See
Settings for Sharing).
If preferred, you may enable the Recording Disclaimer that would prompt attendees for permission when a host starts recording. See Zoom's instructions on how to
Enable the Recording Disclaimer.
Important Note: Sharing a class recording outside of the students in the course may violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Please consider this before sharing.
